Kelly said ‘both Gavin and I are Burnley fans but its always nice to help other local clubs, we feel John has done an excellent job in getting Accrington promoted into the football league and then keeping them there.

The Club’s longest serving Manager and one of the longest serving in The Football League. Since his appointment, the club has won three Championships and five cup competitions, making him by far Stanley’s most successful manager. John was previously Player-Manager at Ashton United where his side narrowly missed promotion, though they did win the First Division Cup twice. In his long playing career at Kirby Town, Burscough, Marine, Southport, Runcorn, Macclesfield, Rhyl, Morecambe and Lancaster, he fully justified his reputation as one of the most prolific goal scorers in non-league football, scoring well over 500 goals. His many honours include England Semi-Pro caps as well as several Player of the Year awards. He was deservedly voted The Conference Manager of the season after leading Stanley to The Championship.
